Why Is My AC Blowing Warm Air? 7 Common Causes
A/C running but not cooling? Here are the seven most common reasons your system blows warm air in Florida, what you can check, and when to call.
The system is running. The fan is blowing. But the air coming out of the vents is warm. In Florida, that goes from annoying to miserable fast.
Sometimes the fix takes 30 seconds. Sometimes it needs a technician. Here is how to tell the difference.
1. The thermostat is set wrong
Start here. Make sure it is set to Cool, not Heat or Fan. Check that the fan is on Auto, not On. With the fan on On, it keeps blowing between cooling cycles, and that air feels warm. Dead batteries in the thermostat can cause problems too.
2. A dirty air filter
A clogged filter chokes airflow across the indoor coil. Less airflow means less cooling, and over time it can make the coil ice over. In Florida, check filters every month and replace them every one to three months.
3. The outdoor unit lost power
Your A/C has two halves. The indoor unit moves the air. The outdoor unit does the cooling. If the outdoor unit's breaker trips or its disconnect is off, the fan inside keeps blowing, but nothing is cooling that air. Check the panel. If the A/C breaker trips again after you reset it, stop and call. That points to an electrical or compressor problem. (Here is what a tripping breaker can mean.)
4. A clogged condensate drain
Florida humidity pulls a lot of water out of the air, and it all goes down a small drain line. When algae and debris clog that line, a safety switch shuts the system down to prevent water damage. If you see water around the indoor unit, this is a likely cause.
5. A dirty or blocked condenser
The outdoor unit has to push heat out of your house. Grass clippings, leaves, dirt and overgrown shrubs make that harder. Keep at least two feet of clear space around the unit and hose off the fins gently.
6. A failed capacitor or contactor
These small electrical parts help start the compressor and outdoor fan. They wear out, and Florida heat speeds that up. When one fails, you may hear the unit hum without starting, or the outdoor fan will not spin. This is one of the most common summer repairs we make, and usually a quick one.
7. Low refrigerant
Refrigerant does not get used up. If it is low, there is a leak. Signs include warm air, hissing near the lines, or ice on the copper line outside. Topping it off without fixing the leak just means paying for the same problem again. Older systems that use R-22 get expensive to recharge, which is often when replacement makes more sense.
What to check before you call
- Confirm the thermostat is on Cool, fan on Auto, set below room temperature.
- Replace the air filter if it is dirty.
- Check the breaker panel for a tripped A/C breaker. Reset it once.
- Look outside. Is the outdoor unit running? Is it blocked by debris?
- Check around the indoor unit for standing water.
If none of those fix it, turn the system off. Running an A/C that is not cooling can damage the compressor, the most expensive part of the system.
When to call for repair
Call us if the outdoor unit will not start, the breaker trips again, you hear hissing or grinding, or you have checked everything above and it is still blowing warm. We diagnose every brand, explain what we find in plain language and give you a quote before we start.
If it is down completely on a hot day, our emergency A/C team answers around the clock and aims to arrive within the hour.
Keep it from happening again
Most of these problems start small. A seasonal tune-up clears the drain line, cleans the coils, tests the capacitor and checks refrigerant. Our membership includes two planned visits a year, priority scheduling and 15% off repairs.
