Why Does My Breaker Keep Tripping? (And When It's Dangerous)

Electrical

A breaker that keeps tripping is telling you something. Here are the common causes, what you can check safely, and when to call an electrician.

A breaker that trips once is doing its job. A breaker that keeps tripping is trying to tell you something.

Breakers exist to cut power before a wire overheats. So when one trips over and over, the problem is almost never the breaker. It is what is on the other side of it.

The four most common causes

1. An overloaded circuit. Too many things pulling power from one circuit at once. Think space heater, hair dryer and microwave in the same part of the house. This is the most common cause and the easiest to fix.

2. A short circuit. A hot wire touches a neutral wire. The current spikes and the breaker trips instantly. Shorts come from damaged wiring, loose connections, or a faulty appliance or outlet.

3. A ground fault. Similar to a short, but the hot wire touches a ground path, often through water. It shows up in kitchens, bathrooms, garages and outdoor outlets. GFCI breakers and outlets are designed to catch this.

4. An arc fault. Damaged or loose wiring creates small sparks inside a wall. You may never see it. Arc fault (AFCI) breakers detect it and shut the circuit down before it starts a fire.

What you can safely check

  • Note which breaker tripped and what was running when it happened.
  • Unplug everything on that circuit, then reset the breaker.
  • Plug things back in one at a time. If one device trips it, the device is likely the problem.
  • If it trips with nothing plugged in, stop. That points to wiring, and that is a job for a licensed electrician.

Do not keep resetting a breaker that keeps tripping. And never swap in a bigger breaker to make it stop. That removes the protection and puts the wiring at risk.

When your A/C is the one tripping it

In Florida, the A/C breaker is one of the most common repeat offenders. A dirty condenser coil, a failing capacitor, a struggling compressor or a refrigerant problem can all make the system pull more power than it should. If the A/C breaker keeps tripping, shut the system off and call for A/C service. Running it that way can turn a repair into a replacement.

When it's an emergency

Call right away, day or night, if you notice any of these:

  • A burning smell near an outlet, switch or the panel
  • Scorch marks, or outlets and switch plates that are warm to the touch
  • Sparking or buzzing from the panel
  • A breaker that will not reset at all

These are signs of a fire risk. A real person answers our emergency electrician line 24/7.

When the panel is the real problem

If breakers trip across the house, your home may simply be drawing more than the panel was built for. That is common in older homes that now run modern A/C, appliances or an EV charger. A panel upgrade brings your home up to what it draws today.
