How Long Do AC Units Last in Florida (and What a Replacement Costs)

Air Conditioning

Florida A/C systems work harder than most. Here is how long yours should last, the signs it is time to replace, and what a new system costs.

An air conditioner in Ohio might run a few months a year. In Highlands County, it runs almost all of them. That changes how long your system lasts and when it makes sense to replace it.

The short answer

Most central A/C systems in Florida last 10 to 15 years. National averages often run longer, but those numbers assume milder climates. Heat, humidity and near-constant runtime wear equipment out faster here.

Where your system lands in that range comes down to three things: how well it was installed, how well it has been maintained, and whether it was sized right for your home in the first place.

Signs it's time to replace

  • It is 12 years old or more and needing repairs more often
  • Your power bills keep climbing without a change in how you use it
  • Some rooms never cool down, or humidity stays high inside
  • It uses R-22 refrigerant. Systems installed before about 2010 often do, and R-22 is no longer produced, which makes recharges expensive
  • A major part fails, like the compressor, on an older system

Repair or replace?

A simple rule of thumb: multiply the age of the system by the repair cost. If the number is over $5,000, replacement is usually the better investment. A $600 repair on a 4-year-old system makes sense. A $1,500 repair on a 13-year-old system usually does not.

We will tell you straight which one makes sense. If a repair will get you several more good years, we will say so.

What a new A/C system costs

Most Florida homeowners spend between $6,000 and $15,000 to replace a central A/C system, installed. The main factors:

  • Size. Measured in tons. Bigger homes need more capacity.
  • Efficiency. Higher SEER2 ratings cost more up front and less every month after.
  • System type. A straight A/C, a heat pump, or a ductless mini-split for spaces without ducts.
  • Ductwork and electrical. Leaky or undersized ducts, or an older panel, can add to the job.

The biggest mistake we see is a system sized by rule of thumb. Too big and it short-cycles and never pulls the humidity out. Too small and it runs nonstop. We size every system to your actual home, not a ballpark.

Make the new one last

  • Get it maintained. Two tune-ups a year catch small problems before they become expensive ones. See our membership.
  • Change filters regularly. Every one to three months in Florida.
  • Look at your attic. Better insulation and air sealing means your A/C works less to keep the house cool.
