How Much Does a Generac Whole-Home Generator Cost in Florida?

Generators

What a Generac whole-home generator really costs in Highlands, Polk and surrounding counties. Sizing, installation, permits and maintenance, explained plainly.

Every hurricane season, the same question comes in: what does it actually cost to never lose power again?

The honest answer is that it depends on your home. But "it depends" is not an answer you can budget around. So here is what drives the price, what a typical install looks like, and what you should expect from whoever puts one in.

The short answer

Most Florida homeowners spend between $10,000 and $20,000 for a Generac home standby generator, fully installed. Smaller homes that only need essentials covered can land below that. Large homes running multiple A/C systems can land above it.

That number includes more than the generator. It covers the transfer switch, the concrete pad, gas and electrical connections, permits and startup. If a quote looks a lot lower, find out what is missing.

What drives the cost

Size. Generators are rated in kilowatts (kW). A 14 kW unit handles essentials like the fridge, lights, well pump and a window unit or two. A 22 to 26 kW unit can run most of a typical home, including central A/C. Bigger homes may need more. The only way to know is a load calculation on your actual home, not a guess based on square footage.

Your A/C. In Florida, the air conditioner is the biggest load in the house. Keeping central air running during an outage is usually what pushes people into a larger unit.

Fuel. Generac standby units run on natural gas or propane. If you already have natural gas, hookup is simpler. If not, you will need a propane tank, which adds cost but gives you fuel on site when you need it most.

Transfer switch. This is what moves your home from utility power to generator power automatically. Some units ship with one. Larger homes or older panels may need an upgraded switch or panel work.

Installation conditions. Distance from the panel and gas line, site prep, and local permit requirements all move the number.

Why installation matters as much as the unit

A generator is only as good as the install. Undersize it and it trips when the A/C kicks on. Wire it wrong and it is a hazard to you and to utility crews working the lines.

We are Generac certified and factory trained. That means the unit gets sized right, installed to code, registered for warranty and started up properly. Done right the first time.

Don't forget maintenance

A standby generator sits for months and then has to work perfectly on the worst day of the year. Annual service keeps it ready: oil, filters, battery, and a full check of the transfer switch. We offer year-round generator maintenance so you are not finding out in August that it will not start.

Is it worth it?

If you have lost food, run a generator extension cord through a window, or spent a hot week without A/C after a storm, you already know the answer. A whole-home generator turns an outage into a non-event. It turns on by itself, usually within seconds.
